Something her father, Ethan had to confront when he recovered her dismembered body parts and was assured that they’d all stick back on and she’d be just fine.

All of this because Ethan himself wasn’t what he appeared to be: a normal twenty something IT tech. Ethan was in fact dead. And had been dead for years predating Rose’s conception. What appeared to be a normal man was in fact the imitation of a human being made entirely of mold, only held together by the stalwart conviction that he was a normal man. (Despite his own ability to reattach his disembodied limbs.)

For the Winters this all starts with the shady dealings of Mia, Ethan’s wife and Rose’s mother. Mia was once employed by a mysterious organization known only as The Connections, a developer and seller of state of the art bioweapons. In the world of Resident Evil this means zombie science and all things adjacent to zombie science.

In this case: a type of mold (dubbed the megamycete) a client (Miranda) commissioned their aid in studying and later developing into a vessel with the appearance and desires of a small child, later rejected by Miranda as an imperfect recreation of her long lost daughter.

BIOHAZARD

Mia’s role was to transport and handle Eveline. As a lonely child who grew up in extreme isolation she was primed to latch onto her handlers as parental figures. Nursing a fixation that turned into violent obsession once the truth came out: that she was to be abandoned by Mia and her partner. And that there was no family for Evie in the world at all.

The slaughter that ensued culminated in the transport ship running aground in the Louisiana bayou during a hurricane. A local family, the Bakers were no stranger to providing their own search and rescue services for such disasters. So Jack, the family patriarch, brought Mia and Eveline into his home.

Hell broke loose immediately.

For years Mia and the Baker family deteriorated under the influence of the mold. Playing the part of Eveline’s perfect family. Luring in victims to kill and bolster their numbers as powerful undead, constantly rejuvenated by the mold’s power over them.

But Eveline still wanted more, she knew Mia had a husband. A missing father for her perfect family. Under the influence of Eveline, Mia made contact with Ethan. Telling him to pick her up from the Baker home.

To Ethan it would seem that he survived impossible odds in his efforts to find his wife but in truth Ethan died almost immediately. But resurrected as a mold construct he persisted against the Baker family, freeing and curing Mia from her own infection under the conviction that he was still himself.

When the dust settled Chris Redfield landed with the BSAA and brought the Winter family into witness protection. A few years later, Rose was born. Eventually they were relocated to a home in rural Eastern Europe. The entire time, Mia managed to hide Ethan (and Rose’s) status as a molded from both him and the organization that was closely monitoring them.

VILLAGE

But it wasn’t enough to escape the attention of Miranda, still looking for the perfect vessel for the consciousness of her dead child. She kidnapped Mia and used her abilities to transform into her perfect replicant, living with Ethan and Rose for an unstated amount of time before Chris Redfield caught on.

Despite Chris’ very rash intervention (shooting what looks like someone’s loved one in front of them and not elaborating on WHY is in fact, not a good move!) Miranda survived and made off with baby Rose. Ethan left to set out on his own into a mysterious village to retrieve her.

Ethan’s journey brought him to each of the Village’s ‘lords,’ every one of them one of Miranda’s failed experiments in resurrecting her daughter. Each lord had been tasked with guarding a piece of Rose’s dismembered body until Miranda was ready to transfer her child’s consciousness into her- as the megamycete stores the memories of all who died in contact with it. It is Miranda’s belief that in its depths lie her own lost daughter.

One by one each lord fell to Ethan and each piece was retrieved by him in turn. At the end of it all he was wounded beyond what a human could convince themself of surviving and was faced with the truth, that he was an extension of the megamycete, and that the real Ethan perished years ago in Louisiana.

Despite the revelation he pressed on, not falling until he was sure Rosemary’s safety was secured in the hands of Chris Redfield.

SHADOWS

After the events of Resident Evil 8, Rose and her mother were shuffled back into witness protection. Knowingly only the barest amounts about her deceased father- that he died to protect her- she now wore his jacket to honor him.

When we meet Rose again, Mia has left the picture and she’s now being pressured into joining a BSAA squadron. Rose doesn’t want to be trained by Chris Redfield. She’s not interested in fighting or being a weapon for anyone. She expresses disdain for how roughly Chris treats his trainees in particular. She’s just a lonely, quiet girl who wants to be a normal teenager.

That wish leads her into the memory of the megamycete, accessing its consciousness through a sample that’s still kept by the BSAA. She’s lured by the promise of freedom from the mold, the side effects of which have made her life unbearably lonely.

Of course, the power that has lured her is once again Miranda in disguise as one of her friends. She has been gathering her strength, and is still looking for the perfect daughter-vessel years after the death of her own body.

With very little convincing Rose jumps into the mold’s mind and is drawn deeper into its layers- the inner stratums- where escape becomes harder. While a mysterious presence (Ethan, disguised) does its best to protect her and her powers flourish.

When a disguised Ethan tells Rose to turn back and disconnect from the megamycete she refuses. Whether or not she even can leave at this point is irrelevant. She doesn't try, it’s not an option for her. She’s THAT determined to get rid of her powers, even after being exposed to various horrors and paths littered with her own dead bodies. (Miranda’s unsuccessful Rose-Replicates)

But this characteristic goes beyond simple stubborn determination or bravery and into outright foolish naïveté and self-destructiveness as she’s led deeper into megamycete’s stratums. It’s this trait that Miranda anticipated and exploited to lure her to the deepest part of the mold’s communal memory. Where she could keep her forever.

(It should be noted that what Rose is after doesn’t seem to be a physical possibility for her. Can she really be cured of the mold? When…it’s what she’s made from? She seems intent on believing that this miracle cure not only exists but that it won’t kill her if it does.)

Rose has grown up deeply ashamed of her status as a molded and refers to herself as being barely human. From being handled by secret agents from a young age to being harassed and shunned by classmates for the symptoms of the mold that lives inside her (a white substance in her sweat, a tendency to hallucinations, heightened emotional responses) she feels deeply isolated without friends and like she’s been robbed of a normal life. This is what drives her into Miranda’s trap. To Rose, life simply isn’t worth living anymore if she has to go on this way. And the trauma of rejection and bullying has left her in a place where she’s no longer willing to reach out and socialize with teenagers her age.

Rose expresses a longing for a father in her life. Telling a presence within the megamycete (Ethan) that she’s often wondered what her childhood would’ve been like if he was there. It’s clear that she attaches an idea of normalcy to her deceased father. She reassures the disguised Ethan that instead of resenting him she simply mourns him and the life she didn’t get to have.

Later, she happily explores Ethan’s sanctuary, a recreation of the home where she spent the first months of her life and gets to reminisce among his memories. Finally inside the mold, before Rose leaves after Miranda’s final defeat, she’s able to meet him face to face and say goodbye.

The experience changes her mind. She comes to embrace the usefulness of her powers and the connection they give her to her father. She puts her mind to training with Chris and seems to be determined to master her mold powers for the better.

Even when she joins Redfield’s team after her change of heart she still breaks free from her handlers to visit her father’s grave, generally acts dismissive of their concerns. The truth is Rose doesn’t seem like soldier material.

And the shadow of what she may be- or what others assume she could be still hangs over her. The agent assigned to her calls her by Eveline’s name. In response Rose lashes out and threatens violence. It becomes clear that despite her status as some kind of agent in training she’s still regarded as a threat by the BSAA who seem to have snipers trained on her.

…and it’s worth noting that she very quickly goes from threatening her handler’s life to being very pleased (and pacified) that he compares her to her father. All in all it is a brief but very loaded glimpse into her dynamic with the BSAA. It appears that not only is Rose in danger, but that she remains vulnerable to manipulation despite (and because of) her emotional instability.

(Pull point is right after she gets into the car with her handler.)

5-10 Key Character Traits:

Emotional
Naïve
Self destructive
Isolated
Rebellious
Short tempered
Stubborn
Unstable
Wistful
Withdrawn

Would you prefer a monster that FITS your character’s personality, CONFLICTS with it, EITHER, or opt for 100% RANDOMIZATION? fits

Opt-Outs:
shade
gargoyle
simulacrum
slime
nymph
lich

harpy (Harrier)

Roleplay Sample:

Rose doesn’t really wear gloves if she can help it, because they’ll just get wet and sticky when she sweats. It makes her feel dirty. So, when she feels a familiar dampness on her mittens she rushes to tear them off immediately.

But her hands are fine. Clean.

They’re pale in the winter cold but she can’t help but stare at them.

These are her hands and they listen when she tells them to flex. Five fingers on each hand. Her father’s wedding ring. Chewed thumb nail. These are her hands and she rubs them together for warmth.

Except they aren’t really. She pulls her mittens back on.

This isn’t even her body. It’s human. Totally human. Some of the others she met were even stranger things than mold people before they arrived here. And now they’re human too.

It doesn’t feel like what she expected.

It doesn’t really feel like anything.

***

In the cafe there’s a group of girls eating together and laughing. They seem nice, or at least happy. She watches them from the corner of her eye. She eats quickly, leaves quickly. She feels like she’s in her high school’s cafeteria again.

TDM

comments
